Brown Trout Fishing in Iceland

Brown Trout Fishing in Iceland, what to expect?

How likely am I to catch a monster brown trout in Iceland?

First, let’s define our term: by “monster,” we’re talking trout tipping the scales at 10 pounds (4.5 kg) or more. These aren’t your average “nice catch” fish. Catching a brown trout of ordinary size (1–4 pounds) in Iceland is straightforward, it’s part of the reason the country is a fly-fishing mecca. But monster trout? Those are elusive. For the casual angler, the chances might be slim. But if you’re fishing with an experienced local guide, targeting the right lakes and rivers during peak season, your odds improve dramatically. Not guaranteed, but absoloutly possible. Like in other places of the world, the fishing is very divverse in Iceland and you wont find a monster in every river and infact you will find the biggest brown trouts in the lakes rather than rivers. Lake thingvallavatn is an obvious candidate, where people from all over the world come to try their luck at a monster Ice age brown trout and like usually when you fish with a specific goal of catching a monster, you'll have to put the time in. Thingvallavatn offers many fishing spots, some more accessable to the public but other, more premium beats are reserved by outfitters.
