What Gear to Bring to Iceland When Fly Fishing?

Are you heading out with a guide or planning a more DIY adventure? Let’s dive in.

What will you be fishing for in Iceland?

Fly fishing in Iceland offers incredible variety. From delicate nymphing for brown trout in smaller rivers and creeks to spey casting for Atlantic salmon on larger rivers. Each fishery and season has its own character, and being prepared with the right gear can make all the difference. Before your trip, do some research or reach out to a local guide or outfitter advice on conditions and gear recommendations.

Rods and Reels

For trout and Arctic char, a single-handed rod in the 4–7 weight range is most practical. These rods handle everything from small dries to heavier streamers. However, packing an 8-weight rod is a smart move . it’s perfect for sea-run fish like Atlantic salmon and the sea trout.
A quality reel with a smooth, reliable drag is essential. Icelandic fish are strong and will test your gear, so make sure your reel can handle the runs.
When fishing the larger salmon rivers, many anglers prefer two-handed spey rods in 8–10 weight, allowing for efficient casting across wide waters and better line control in windy conditions.

Clothing and Wading Gear

Iceland’s weather is famously unpredictable — you might experience sun, wind, and rain all in a single afternoon. Proper clothing will keep you comfortable and focused on the fishing. If your trip involves wading (and most do), bring waders and sturdy boots, or arrange to have them provided by your outfitter. Important: when traveling with fishing gear, Iceland requires all equipment to be sanitized and certified before use to prevent the spread of aquatic diseases. Clothing essentials: Waterproof and windproof outer jacket Warm mid-layers (fleece or wool for insulation) Thermal base layers (top and leggings) Wool socks Warm hat and gloves
